Keeping employees safe when travelling abroad

The terrorist attacks two weeks ago in Brussels are a sad reminder there are ongoing risks when traveling to major cities and the threat from terrorism does not appear to be going away any time soon.

So what measures should companies who have employees travelling abroad take to ensure their staff remain safe? We provide some advice for Companies and for their business travellers.

Keeping employees safe

Companies should

  • Aim to stay well-informed of the security environment and the threats in countries where they have employees travelling on business.
  • Monitor local media or use an intelligence alert service to keep up to date on regional and local developments that may impact travel and operations
  • Establish communication protocols should a situation occur

Business Travellers should

  • Maintain high levels of awareness of their situation and stay away from all suspicious objects, vehicles and persons. Report anything suspicious to the authorities
  • Not leave luggage unattended
  • Learn where emergency exits are located and plan in advance how to get out of a building, subway, congested public area or traffic should a situation arise.
  • Carry telephone numbers for the appropriate embassy or consulate. In the event of an incident, travellers should check-in with both their Company and with the appropriate government agency.
  • Maintain the same level of vigilance during off-duty periods
  • Follow the advice and directions from Police and other security personnel at all times.
